NEBRASKA, CUSTER COUNTY, OCONTO:

Our town was located in the fall of 1887.  It was to be called Olax but the name was changed because of its similarity to Lomax, Nebraska.  It received the name Oconto from a man by that name, according to local tradition; but doubtless the name is for Oconto, Oconto County, Wisconsin.  Oconto is a Menominee Indian word meaning the "place of the picerel".
